Positive effects of laser acupuncture in methamphetamine users undergoing group cognitive behavioral therapy: A pilot study
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine May 28, 2021
Shiao YH, Chen YC, Yeh YC, et al. - The clinical efficacy of laser acupuncture combined with group cognitive behavioral therapy for methamphetamine (MA) addiction treatment was investigated. Participants were 15 MA users who participated in group cognitive behavioral therapy and met the inclusion criteria. Laser acupuncture treatment was provided to the participants once a week for 2 months (total eight treatments) on selected acupoints (PC6, HT7, LI4, ST36, SP6, and LR3). Of these 15 participants, seven completed the trial. A decrease in drug use was identified in urinalysis for MA from 57.1% to 28.6%. They noted significantly lower PSQI scores (−3.73 and −4.10, respectively; both ), as well as BDI scores (−5.64 and −8.17, respectively; and 0.001, respectively), at 1 and 2 months after treatment. Findings suggest a possible value of laser acupuncture combined with group cognitive behavioral therapy for improving sleep quality, alleviating depression, and reducing MA use.
