Platelet number is positively and independently associated with glycated hemoglobin in non-diabetic overweight and obese subjects

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jan 09, 2019

De Pergola G, et al. - In this study involving an apparently healthy population represented by overweight and obese individuals with glucose normal range and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, researchers examined the link between platelet number and glucose metabolism, assessed by HbA1c levels. This study included a total of 240 individuals, aged 18-70 years, of whom 177 were women and 63 were men. The investigators assessed body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, platelet count and fasting blood glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, HbA1c, uric acid, triglyceride levels, total cholesterol, and high and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. For the first time ever, a strong positive and independent association between HbA1c and platelet number was established in non-diabetic overweight and obese participants in this study.
