Plasma neurofilaments correlate with disability in progressive multiple sclerosis patients
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Jul 31, 2019
Ferraro D, Guicciardi C, De Biasi S, et al. - In plasma samples of untreated patients with primary (PP) and secondary (SP) progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers measured neurofilaments (NFL) and correlated them with disability, disease severity and prior and subsequent disability progression. On plasma samples of 70 progressive (27 PP and 43 SP), 21 relapsing-remitting MS patients and 10 healthy controls, NFL concentrations were measured. According to findings, plasma NFL levels are associated with a disability and increase over time in PP/SP progressive MS patients, but are not related to prior or subsequent progression of disability, as measured by EDSS, which may not be a sufficiently sensitive tool in this context.
