Plant-based diets and incident CKD and kidney function
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology May 11, 2019
Kim H, et al. - In a population-based study with 14,686 middle-aged adults enrolled in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, researchers examined the link between plant-based diets, incident CKD, and kidney function decline. They also assessed whether risk differed by various types of plant-based diets. They used four plant-based diet indices ie, the overall plant-based diet index, healthy plant-based diet index, provegetarian diet, and less healthy plant-based diet index. All indices negatively scored animal foods. Participants were followed-up for a median duration of 24 years. According to findings, favorable kidney disease outcomes were observed in relation to higher adherence to healthy plant-based diets and a vegetarian diet.
