Placental capillary endothelial cells are connected by cytoplasmic processes
Placenta Sep 05, 2017
Palaiologou E, et al. – This study utilized 3D imaging to investigate the junctions between fetal capillary endothelial cells in the placenta and how these associated with the function. Serial block face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) allowed the in–depth visualisation of the structure of the endothelial cells in 3D and uncovered features that would not be apparent in 2D. The role of these cytoplasmic processes remains to be determined, but they may represent a structural feature, strengthening endothelial junctions in dilated terminal capillaries, or allow communication between adjacent cells.intersections in widened terminal vessels, or permit correspondence between contiguous cells.
