Phase II randomized clinical trial of endosonography and PET/CT vs clinical assessment only for follow-up after surgery for upper gastrointestinal cancer (EUFURO study)
British Journal of Surgery Oct 17, 2019
Bjerring OS, et al. - As upper gastrointestinal malignancies have a poor prognosis, researchers examined if cancer recurrences following surgery could be detected with a structured follow-up program including endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT, which may lead to the identification of more eligible patients for therapy. They randomized patients 1:1, following surgery with curative intent for adenocarcinomas in the gastro-oesophageal junction, stomach or pancreas, to either standard clinical assessment in the outpatient clinic at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months after operation, or clinical assessment plus imaging including [18F]FDG PET/CT and EUS. Using EUS and PET/CT led to the detection of more asymptomatic cancer recurrences during follow-up after surgery for upper gastrointestinal cancer and hence more patients referral for treatment without prolonging overall survival.
