Permanent reduction plate and intramedullary nailing of open tibia fractures: Do we need to take them out?
Injury Apr 08, 2021
Revak T, Mahle P, Nicolaou D, et al. - This study was sought to distinguish a cohort of open tibia shaft fractures treated with intramedullary nails aided by permanent reduction plating. Using trauma registry data, an IRB- approved retrospective study was performed from January 2014 to June 2018 at a Level 1 trauma center. Researchers recruited a total of 389 patients who had undergone tibial intramedullary nailing with 162 identified as open fractures during the study period. This study’s findings demonstrate that permanent reduction plating, in the setting of open tibia fractures, does not delay time to fracture union or increase the risk of nonunion or infection.
