Periodontal condition is associated with disease duration and motoric disabilities in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: Results of a cross-sectional study

Ziebolz D, et al. - Authors sought to probe the dental and periodontal health as well as potentially periodontal pathogenic bacteria in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) vs healthy control subjects (HC). Compared to HC, patients with AS show worse dental and periodontal conditions. Therefore, a higher prevalence of bacteria related to insufficient oral hygiene was seen in AS. The periodontal burden was affected by Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) and duration of AS. Accordingly, in AS patients, particular attention considering dental care and oral hygiene seemed to be reasonable.
