Perceptions of dietary factors promoting and preventing nephrolithiasis: A cross-sectional survey
World Journal of Urology Aug 09, 2019
Fakhoury MQ, Gordon B, Shorter B, et al. - A 24-question survey, evaluating intake-related risk factors for stone disease, was conducted prospectively in 1,018 individuals by the researchers in order to evaluate knowledge of both promoting and preventive dietary factors on nephrolithiasis in a diverse patient population. Respondents exhibited limited knowledge of nutrient factors that affect stone development. Nevertheless, most study individuals reported a readiness to make lifestyle modifications directed at reducing their risk for stone disease Respondents reporting former nephrolithiasis education were less inclined to state that diet had no impact on kidney stone formation. The type of practitioner who counseled the respondent was not connected with patient information for stone disease. Therefore, among this population, the education of diet-related risk factors for nephrolithiasis was inadequate. Respondents who received former education seemed to sustain the knowledge of dietary risk for nephrolithiasis. Individuals also revealed a readiness to make necessary dietary modifications if that information was given. Moreover, these conclusions reflected the requirement for more comprehensive patient education approaches on the modifiable risk factors for nephrolithiasis, provided that most stone formers encountered a recurrence.
