Patient-reported advantages and disadvantages of peritoneal dialysis: Results from the PDOPPS
BMC Nephrology Apr 07, 2019
Sukul N, et al. - In this cohort study, researchers examined the links between patient-reported perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and clinical outcomes among 2760 PD patients in the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS). A questionnaire was used to extract information regarding PD experiences of participants, and by averaging the response scores, an advantage/disadvantage score (ADS) was calculated for each patient. Mortality, transition to hemodialysis (HD), patient-reported quality of life (QOL), and depression were assessed as outcomes. Despite a generally favorable perception of PD among patients, patient-reported disadvantages were related to transition to HD, lower QOL, and depression. Patient outcomes and the experience of PD may be improved with strategies addressing these disadvantages, especially attenuating solution storage space.
