Patient perspectives on the meaning and impact of fatigue in hemodialysis: A systematic review and thematic analysis of qualitative studies
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Apr 11, 2019
Jacobson J, et al. - Via this systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative studies, researchers focused on the views of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis regarding the definition and effect of fatigue. They identified and analyzed 65 studies involving 1,713 participants. These studies were searched in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, reference lists, and PhD dissertations from inception to October 2018. They identified 4 themes associated with fatigue: debilitating and exhausting burden of dialysis, restricted life participation, diminishing capacities to fulfil relationship roles, and vulnerable to misunderstanding. The patients who suffered fatigue described it as profound and relentless exhaustion that pervades the entire body and encompasses weakness. Patients reported drained vitality and constrained ability to do usual activities and fulfill their roles and meet personal aspirations due to fatigue. There is a requirement for explicit acknowledgment of the influence of fatigue as well as improving fatigue by establishing additional effective interventions.
