Patient perspectives on the lived experience of acne and its treatment among adult women with acne: A qualitative study
JAMA Jul 31, 2021
Barbieri JS, Fulton R, Neergaard R, et al. - Researchers sought to explore the lived experience of acne and its treatment among a cohort of adult women. A qualitative analysis was carried out using the free listing and open-ended, semistructured interviews with patients at a large academic healthcare system (University of Pennsylvania Health System) and private practice (Dermatologists of Southwest Ohio). Fifty women aged 18 to 40 with moderate to severe acne (mean [SD] age, 28 [5.38] years; 24 [48%] White) took part in interviews between August 30, 2019, and December 31, 2020. According to the findings of this qualitative study, women with acne have considerable concerns about their looks and suffer from mental and emotional health issues as well as disruptions in their personal and professional lives. Furthermore, many patients report difficulties in locating effective treatments and obtaining care.
