Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure vs medical therapy for prevention of recurrent stroke in patients with prior cryptogenic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Jul 10, 2018
Akobeng AK, et al. - For the prevention of stroke in patients with prior cryptogenic stroke, researchers evaluated the effect of closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) vs medical therapy. A Systematic review and meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials, comprising data for 3,440 adults randomized to receive PFO closure (n=1,829) or medical therapy (n=1,611) was performed. Findings revealed a reduced risk of stroke with PFO closure vs medical therapy. Researchers recommend offering PFO closure to adults with cryptogenic stroke.
