Parathyroidectomy improves cardiovascular risk factors in normocalcemic and hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders May 14, 2019
Beysel S, et al. - Researchers determined how cardiovascular risk factors in patients with normocalcemic and hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) were influenced by parathyroidectomy. They performed this case-controlled study in 35 patients with normocalcemic PHPT, 60 age- and sex-matched hypercalcemic PHPT, and 60 age- and sex-matched controls. Prior to and 6 months following parathyroidectomy, cardiometabolic disorders were assessed. Cardiovascular risk factors had comparable increases in the normocalcemic and hypercalcemic PHPT groups, independently of serum calcium. In both the groups, parathyroidectomy induced an improvement in the increased cardiovascular risk factors.
