Panoramic radiographs and quantitative ultrasound of the radius and phalanx III to assess bone mineral status in postmenopausal women
BMC Oral Health Aug 01, 2018
Grocholewicz K, et al. - Authors compared the mandibular morphometric analysis and quantitative ultrasound (QUS) at the radius and proximal phalanx III finger to assess bone mineral status in postmenopausal women. They conducted a mandibular morphometric analysis that comprised: distance between upper and lower mandibular borders just behind the mental foramen (H), distance: mental foramen - inferior mandibular cortex (IM) and mandibular cortical width at the mental region (MCW). As per data, for detecting osteoporosis, mandibular Cortical Index could be used as a screening tool. A reliable way of assessing bone status was assessed by quantitative ultrasound at the phalanx III. Findings suggested a significant association of mandibular cortical index (MCI) with the skeletal status as well as with H, MCW and mandibular ratio (MR). An association of phalanx T-score with PMI, MR or MCW was not seen.
