p63 expression in merkel cell carcinoma: Comparative immunohistochemistry invokes TAp63 as the dominant isoform involved
Human Pathology Jan 30, 2020
Walsh NM, Saggini A, Pasternak S, et al. - In this study, researchers tried to find out the correlation between p63 expression and overall survival in Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). They stratified 53 cases [28 males and 25 females, median age 79 years, (interquartile range {IQR} 71-88)] by morphology and viral status. They conducted immunohistochemistry, they derived H-scores for nuclear expression of p63 and p40 and analyzed inter-observer agreement. They documented clinical, pathological and outcome data. A relationship was found between p63 expression and reduced overall survival in MCC and indicate consistency in scoring this prognostic parameter. They noted that TAp63 is the dominant isoform of the protein involved. Future research is needed to identify the paradoxical tumor suppressor-like activity of this isoform in p63 positive MCCs with reduced overall survival.
