Overweight and obesity in adults with cystic fibrosis: An Italian multicenter cohort study
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Jun 01, 2021
Gramegna A, Aliberti S, Contarini M, et al. - Researchers undertook this multicenter, observational, cross-sectional analysis to understand if and how overweight and obesity (OW) could impact adults suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF). A total of 321 adults with CF were examined at three large CF centers in Italy. Among participants, OW prevalence was estimated to be 22%. There was a correlation of BMI with ppFEV1 with median ppFEV1 significantly higher in patients with OW relative to comparisons. The OW group was found to have significantly higher median blood levels of cholesterol and systemic hypertension, vs the normal weight and underweight. In the light of these observations, it was inferred that individuals experiencing CF and OW hold relevance as a patient population and this group might deserve better definition as well as proper clinical management.
