Outcomes of small-gauge vitreoretinal surgery without scleral-depressed shaving of the vitreous base in the era of wide-angle viewing systems
British Journal of Ophthalmology Feb 21, 2019
Tabandeh H, et al. - In this retrospective, consecutive case series, investigators examined 312 eyes to analyze the consequences of small-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) treatment without scleral-depressed shaving of the vitreous base. Among 296 eyes, the retina was reattached with a single procedure. They observed the best-corrected visual activity (BCVA) at baseline: >20/40 in 24% of eyes, 20/50–20/100 in 48 eyes, 20/200–20/400 in 46 eyes and <20/400 in 46% of eyes. The BCVA was >20/40 in 168 eyes, 20/50–20/100 in 60 eyes, 20/200–20/400 in 49 eyes and <20/400 in 35 eyes at the last follow-up. Overall, an association of small-gauge PPV without scleral-depressed vitreous base shaving with good anatomical and visual outcomes was noticed.
