Outcomes of self-expandable metal stent placement for malignant oesophageal strictures

Clinical Radiology Nov 17, 2019

Gao F, et al. - Individuals with oesophageal malignancy who underwent stent placement between 2011 and 2016 for dysphagia were involved in order to investigate the outcomes of oesophageal stenting for malignant strictures and to examine the relationship between the follow-up time and chief complications. Two hundred and ninety-eight individuals were involved in the study. Minor complications transpired in 113 people including chest pain, foreign body sensation, hiccups, and reflux symptoms. In 93 individuals, major adverse events including pneumonia, migration, perforation, bleeding, and restenosis occurred. In 45 individuals, oesophago-airway fistula transpired. The incidence of recurrent dysphagia, pneumonia, and oesophago-airway fistula rose over 3 months and reduced following another 3 months. The incidence of major complications as a percentage of survivors continued to be high following 3 months. Between the incidence and the follow-up time over this period, spearman analysis revealed a notable positive relationship. In conclusion, the major complications of oesophageal stenting rose with time over 3 months and persisted to be high for another 3 months. Hence, in individuals with short expected survival (usually < 3 months), stenting should be taken into consideration for palliation.
