Outcomes of a staged midurethral sling strategy for stress incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse
Obstetrics and Gynecology Oct 04, 2019
Giugale LE, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the proportion of women in whom resolution of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) symptoms occurs following surgery for pelvic organ prolapse without a concomitant incontinence procedure. In this retrospective observational study, 93 women with preoperative subjective and objective SUI were included. These women underwent minimally invasive sacrocolpopexy (78%) or uterosacral ligament suspension (22%) from 2009 to 2015. Outcomes revealed the resolution of preoperative SUI in nearly a third of women after prolapse surgery without a concomitant incontinence procedure. In a population typically offered a concomitant midurethral sling (MUS) procedure at the time of prolapse repair, a staged approach led to nearly two-thirds fewer patients undergoing MUS procedures. This information may aid in preoperative shared decision making.
