Outcomes for adults with anorexia nervosa who do not respond early to outpatient treatment
International Journal of Eating Disorders Mar 29, 2021
Wade T, Ambwani S, Cardi V, et al. - Researchers intended to gain insights on patients suffering from anorexia nervosa who do not exhibit early response to treatment and may have a poorer outcome. They used an existing dataset of 187 patients with anorexia nervosa across 22 eating disorder outpatient services in the UK, to identify eligible participants, which included those who had initiated treatment and underwent at least one body mass index observation in the first 6 weeks of treatment. It was noted that 23% of patients achieved good outcome and 15% achieved remission. Greater functional impairment at baseline was identified as a predictor of good outcome. The establishment of targeted engagement approaches will be informed by recognizing sub‐groups of anorexia nervosa cases that fail to achieve good outcome post-treatment.
