Outcomes associated with hospital admissions for accidental opioid overdose in British Columbia: A retrospective cohort study
BMJ Open May 10, 2019
Morrow RL, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers examined the connection between accidental opioid overdose and neurological, respiratory, cardiac and other serious adverse events and if the risk of these adverse events increased in hospital readmissions vs initial admissions. According to the results, 3% of admissions for accidental opioid overdose included encephalopathy and 25% included one or more adverse events. No evidence that readmissions had a higher risk of encephalopathy or other adverse events vs initial admissions for an accidental overdose of opioids was seen. In the year following an accidental opioid overdose, the risk of serious morbidity and mortality may be increased.
