Osteoporotic fractures in patients with atrial fibrillation treated with conventional vs direct anticoagulants
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Oct 26, 2019
Binding C, et al. - Among patients treated for atrial fibrillation, researchers compared those who received vitamin K antagonist (VKA) with those who received direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in terms of the risk of osteoporotic fractures. They used the Danish national registries to select the patients. Inclusion criteria required patients to have no previous use of osteoporosis medication and having received 180 days of oral anticoagulant (OAC) treatment. This study included a total of 37,350 patients. Among patients with atrial fibrillation on OAC, a low absolute risk of osteoporotic fractures was observed in this nationwide population, however, a significantly lower risk of osteoporotic fractures was observed in relation to treatment with DOAC vs VKA.
