Osteoarthritis and risk of mortality in the USA: A population-based cohort study
International Journal of Epidemiology Sep 04, 2018
Mendy A, et al. - Researchers used data on adult participants in the 1988-1994 and 1999-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, followed for mortality through 2011, to gain clarity regarding the association of osteoarthritis (OA) with mortality. OA was defined by self-report. Kellgren–Lawrence score ≥ 2 defined radiographic knee OA (RKOA) in a subset of participants 60 years or older with knee X-rays. Adjusting for covariates, the mortality hazard ratio associated with self-reported OA and RKOA was determined by using Cox proportional hazards. Findings demonstrated no association of self-reported OA with mortality. Higher cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and renal mortality, particularly in people with early onset of the disease or with obesity, was observed in relation to RKOA.
