Oral doxycycline compared with intravenous ceftriaxone in the treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis: A multicentre, equivalence, randomized, open-label trial
Clinical Infectious Diseases Mar 10, 2020
Kortela E, Kanerva MJ, Puustinen J, et al. - The efficacy of oral doxycycline vs ceftriaxone in the treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) was determined. Researchers recruited 210 patients with neurological symptoms suggestive of LNB without other obvious reasons between Sep 14, 2012, and Dec 28. The following inclusion criteria were followed: 1) production of B. burgdorferi specific antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or serum; or 2) B. burgdorferi DNA in the CSF; or 3) an erythema migrans during the past three months. The patients were assigned to receive doxycycline (n = 104) or ceftriaxone (n = 106). Outcomes suggest equal efficacy of oral doxycycline and intravenous ceftriaxone in the treatment of LNB.
