Oral cyclosporine is effective in stabilizing active vitiligo: Results of a randomized controlled trial
Dermatologic Therapy Jun 24, 2021
Mehta H, Kumar S, Parsad D, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing the effectiveness and safety of oral cyclosporine with oral dexamethasone mini pulse (OMP) in patients of active vitiligo. Fifty patients with active vitiligo were randomly assigned to two groups of 25. Group 1 received OMP (2.5 mg dexamethasone) on two consecutive days/week for 4 months, whereas group 2 received cyclosporine (3 mg/kg/day) for 4 months. In both groups, the extent of repigmentation, improvement in patient assessment score, vitiligo quality of life, and clinical markers of disease activity were marginal and similar. When compared with OMP, cyclosporine results in earlier disease stabilization in active vitiligo. Despite its reputation as a rescue medication in dermatology, low-dose cyclosporine can be an effective therapeutic option in vitiligo patients.
