Optic nerve head microvascular changes after phacoemulsification surgery

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Sep 21, 2019

Karabulut M, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers identified microvascular changes in the optic nerve head (ONH) detected after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery by optical consistency tomography angiography (OCTA) and intraocular pressure changes (IOPs). It included 24 eyes. They excluded eyes with retinal vascular pathology, any type of age-related macular degeneration, IOP more than 21 mmHg, axial length less than 20 mm and more than 24 mm, corneal edema and cataracts that can disrupt images, and history of ocular surgery. Study participants had OCTA imaging and IOP measurement preoperatively (baseline) and postoperatively (weeks 1 and 4). A significant negative correlation was found between the inside disc and total vessel density % (VD) and IOP at weeks 1 and 4. Findings suggested that phacoemulsification surgery can lead to a reduction in IOP and an increase in VD of the ONH.
