Opioid and benzodiazepine coprescribing in the United States before and after US Food and Drug Administration boxed warning
JAMA Psychiatry Nov 14, 2019
Zhang VS, et al. - In the United States, a 5-fold increase in overdose deaths involving prescription opioids has been reported since 1999. The US Food and Drug Administration issued a boxed warning on August 31, 2016, in response to rising coprescriptions, highlighting the risks of coprescribing opioids and benzodiazepines. Researchers here examined whether the boxed warning influenced the frequency of coprescriptions. They here sought to provide the first national estimate of opioid and benzodiazepine coprescribing before and after the boxed warning. Opioid-related overdoses often involve benzodiazepines. The risk of overdose and death increases with concomitant use of benzodiazepines and opioids. As per prior research, a decrease in opioid prescribing after the March 2016 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline has occurred.
