Ophthalmic emergency-room visits during the covid-19 pandemic – A comparative study
BMC Ophthalmology May 20, 2021
Yehezkeli V, Rotenstreich Y, Ben Haim LN, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing ophthalmic emergency room (OER) visits during the Coronavirus disease-19 (Covid-19) pandemic to those during a control period. They compared all OER visits to Meir Medical Center in Israel between March 15 and April 15, 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic and government-mandated quarantine, to the same period in 2019. Overall, 1,311 visits of 1,158 patients were involved in this investigation, 477 in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and 834 during the same period in 2019. OER visits were less frequent during the Covid-19 pandemic compared to 2019, despite the fact that patient demographics remained unchanged. During the pandemic, visits were more likely to be for more severe ocular conditions, with worse visual acuity at presentation and requiring more medical and surgical treatment, implying a greater need for ocular evaluation. This analysis may be useful in the future for healthcare resource management in similar scenarios.
