Operative vs nonoperative management of displaced midshaft clavicle fractures in pediatric and adolescent patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Oct 28, 2019
Gao B, et al. - Studies that reported on outcomes of operative and/or nonoperative treatment of displaced midshaft clavicle fractures in individuals younger than 19 years were involved in order to systematically review and quantitatively examine outcomes in operative vs nonoperative management of displaced midshaft clavicle fractures in pediatric and adolescent individuals. A total of 3,810 articles were recognized, and 12 met the inclusion criteria. These studies included 497 individuals with an average age of 14.1 years. In this population, both operative and nonoperative management of displaced midshaft clavicle fractures give superior rates of union and patient-reported outcome measures. In comparison with nonoperative management, operative management gave a faster return to activity, better Constant scores, and equal QuickDASH scores. Operative management had greater complication rates and complications that needed secondary operative treatment (mostly associated with implant prominence).
