Onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus in rural areas of the USA
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Oct 04, 2019
Rogers MAM - The researcher focused on the incidence of type 1 diabetes in the USA, using an integrated database from a large nationwide health insurer in the USA (Clinformatics Data Mart Database) between 2001 and 2017. An analysis of longitudinal information on nearly 77 million individuals was performed. Across the 50 states in the USA, the greatest incidence of type 1 diabetes was found in areas of low population density. People in the lowest population density areas demonstrated rates that were 2.28 times that of individuals residing in high-density areas. Across several measures of rural status, this link was found to be consistent. Across all 4 general areas of the USA, a link between rural areas and the incidence of type 1 diabetes was found. In rural areas, a predilection of type 1 diabetes was reported, which offers clues to potential factors related to the start of this autoimmune disease.
