Ocular manifestations of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in a tertiary care academic medical center in the United States: A cross-sectional study

Clinical Ophthalmology Apr 20, 2021

Feng Y, Park J, Zhou Y, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective, cross-sectional study on individuals aged 18 and over who were hospitalized for COVID-19 with the aim to report on the ocular manifestations among these patients. Among a total of 400 included patients [mean patient age: 61.7 years; 233 (58.3%) males], 38 (9.5%) patients had development of ocular signs and symptoms. Conjunctival injection was the most common ocular abnormality, followed by vision changes and ocular irritation. Findings revealed that development of ocular abnormalities did not correlate with factors linked with severe systemic COVID-19 disease. Researchers emphasize physicians not to ignore the rate of ocular manifestations of COVID-19, and recommend them to routinely evaluate for ocular involvement in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
