Acta Ophthalmologica May 22, 2020
Chen L, Deng C, Chen X, et al. - The ocular manifestations and clinical characteristics of COVID‐19 patients caused by SARS‐CoV‐2 in Wuhan, China were examined. Among 535 recruited COVID‐19 patients at Mobile Cabin Hospital and Tongji Hospital, 27 patients (5.0%) had conjunctival congestion as presenting symptom and 4 patients had conjunctival congestion as the initial symptom. Hence, conjunctival congestion is identified to be one of the COVID‐19‐related ocular symptoms, which could occur as the initial symptoms. The risk factor for conjunctival congestion in COVID‐19 patients may comprise frequent hand–eye contact. They advocate screening of patients with conjunctival congestion by ophthalmologists during the outbreak of COVID‐19. Based on observations, provision of eye‐care equipment and strengthening of education on eye protection were emphasized.
