Ocular assessments of a series of newborns gestationally exposed to maternal COVID-19 infection
JAMA Ophthalmology Apr 11, 2021
Kiappe OP, da Cruz NFS, Rosa PAC, et al. - Researchers sought to report on ophthalmological manifestations, if any, in newborns after maternal COVID-19 infection. In this case series, 165 newborns exposed to SARS-CoV-2 were enrolled and underwent ophthalmological evaluation. Retinal vascular tortuosity and venous engorgement were identified in one exposed newborn on performing ophthalmoscopy, intraretinal hemorrhages were identified in 7 newborns, and retinopathy of prematurity was observed in 2 newborns. Overall findings did not support moderate or high increased risk of ocular involvement in newborns of mothers with SARS-CoV-2 infection regardless of gestational age.
