Octogenarian patients sleep and delirium experiences in hospital and four years after aortic valve replacement: A qualitative interview study

BMJ Open Jan 11, 2021

Amofah HA, Broström A, Instenes I, et al. - An explorative and descriptive design with a longitudinal qualitative approach was applied to examine how octogenarian patients with delirium following aortic valve replacement experience their sleep and delirium situation. Researchers included patients at a tertiary university hospital with 1,400 beds. They conducted delirium and insomnia screening at baseline and 5 postoperative days following aortic valve treatment. This study’s findings demonstrate that sleep disturbances and delirium are long-term burdens for octogenarian patients and need greater attention in order to improve patient care. "Hours in bed represented emotional chaos" was one overarching theme seen in the content analyses. Sleep disturbances persisted even 4 years following treatment, with patients still remembering strongly the delirium incidences.
