Obstructive sleep apnea and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair— Are complication rates really increased?
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Jun 27, 2019
Cancienne JM, et al. - Via a database of patients who underwent rotator cuff repair with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the researchers assessed the influence OSA on complications after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Markedly increased emergency department visits and hospital admission were observed in patients with OSA. In comparison to control subjects, the risk was decreased by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) orders. Patients without CPAP had significantly increased risks of emergency department visits, hospital admission, and respiratory complications as that of control subjects. Hence, higher risks of emergency department visits and hospital admissions postoperatively in patients with OSA were noted; however, the risk was diminished with CPAP order. Further, the independent risk presented by OSA for the studied complications was considerably lower than other comorbidities.
