Obesity is associated with increased risk for mortality among hospitalized patients with COVID‐19
Obesity Jul 01, 2020
Pettit NN, MacKenzie EL, Ridgway J, et al. - Given the reports inscribing obesity as a risk factor for severe COVID‐19 caused by the SARS‐CoV2 virus, researchers here examined if obesity is a risk factor for mortality among COVID‐19 patients. In this retrospective cohort study, 238 patients with COVID‐19 were included. Among these patients, 218 patients (91.6%) were African American, 113 (47.5%) were male, and the mean age was 58.5 years; 146 (61.3%) were obese (BMI > 30kg/m2), with 63 (26.5%), 29 (12.2%), and 54 (22.7%) with class 1, 2, and 3 obesity, respectively. Based on outcomes, they suggest significant predictive value of obesity for mortality among inpatients with COVID‐19 after adjusting for age, gender, and other comorbidities. In addition, hypoxemia was more frequent among patients with obesity.
