Nutrient adequacy and diet quality in a Mediterranean population with metabolic syndrome: A cross-sectional study
Clinical Nutrition Mar 27, 2019
del Mar Bibiloni M, et al. - Because few studies have compared micronutrient consumption with fulfilment of average requirements (EAR) in non-diabetic, pre-diabetic, and diabetic adults at high cardiovascular risk, researchers evaluated these variables in a large sample of participants in the PREDIMED-PLUS randomized trial of primary cardiovascular prevention with diet and physical activity. Using standard criteria, study participants were classified as non-diabetic (n=2,390), pre-diabetic (n=1,322), or diabetic (n=2,080). Using a validated food frequency questionnaire, food and nutrient intake were assessed. Using a 17-item energy-restricted Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) questionnaire, diet quality was also determined. According to this cross-sectional study, older Mediterranean people with metabolic syndrome and diabetes had better nutrient adequacy and MedDiet adherence vs people with pre-diabetes or no diabetes.
