Novel biomarkers of oxidative stress as predictive indicators of neurological outcome after out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Sep 04, 2020
Ishikawa K, Inoue Y, Sumi Y, et al. - Given that novel biomarkers, biological antioxidant potential (BAP), and diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROM) are potential predictors of neurological outcome after out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest (OHCPA), researchers sought to assess the utility of BAP and d-ROM in the prediction of patient outcomes after OHCPA. Blood samples were obtained from May 2011 to June 2013 shortly after OHCPA patients were admitted to the hospital. Overall, 152 OHCPA patients were involved, and 26 patients achieved a return of spontaneous circulation. Data reported that the d-ROM and BAP receiver operating characteristics curve for predicting survival was 0.596 and 0.834, respectively, 28 days after OHCPA. Oxidative stress, indicated by BAP on admission, has been closely associated with the neurological outcome following OHCPA.
