Novel antibiotic-irrigating wound protector reduces infectious complications in robot-assisted radical cystectomy with extracorporeal urinary diversion

Kim AH, Ruel NH, Yamzon J, et al. - As per preliminary data gained in this study, an antibiotic-irrigating wound protector (AWP) can aid in lowering infectious complications following robotic radical cystectomy with extracorporeal urinary diversion (RCUD).
Using a prospectively maintained bladder cancer database, researchers retrieved data of patients undergoing robotic RCUD at a tertiary referral center 1 year prior to implementing an AWP and 1 year after (2018-2020).
Among a total of 92 included patients, there were 46 had use of a traditional wound protector (TWP) and 46 consecutive with an AWP.
The TWP group and the AWP group had an overall complication rate of 65.2% vs 26.1% at 30-days, and 67.4% vs 30.4% at 90-days, respectively.
Focusing on infections, the two groups showed a 30-day complication rate of 30.4% vs 6.5%, respectively.
