Normal-range thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and cardiovascular events and mortality in type 2 diabetes
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Oct 25, 2019
de Vries TI, de Valk HW, van der Graaf Y, et al. - In people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and high cardiovascular risk, researchers ascertained if plasma thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the normal range are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality. From the Second Manifestations of ARTerial disease cohort, 1,265 candidates with high cardiovascular risk, T2D, and TSH within the normal range (0.35-5.00 mIU/L) were included. During a total follow-up of 8,183 years, a total of 191 major cardiovascular events (vascular death, stroke, and myocardial infarction) occurred. Findings suggested an association of higher TSH levels within the normal range with a lower risk of stroke in high-risk patients with T2D, but not with the risk of other cardiovascular events or mortality.
