Nonmelanoma skin cancer frequency and risk factors
JAMA Mar 18, 2019
De Rosa N, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers identified the frequency of and risk factors for nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in Australian heart and lung transplant recipients. Older age at transplantation and history of pretransplant skin cancer were included risk factors for NMSC. A Fitzpatrick skin type III to VI was related to a reduced risk of NMSC. Findings suggested no association of sex, transplanted organ, UV radiation exposure, and history of allograft rejection with an increased skin cancer risk. In a cohort analysis of 94 Australian patients who underwent heart and/or lung transplant, there seemed to be a high NMSC frequency. Routine dermatological surveillance is recommended for similar populations at frequent intervals.
