Non-LDL dyslipidemia is prevalent in the young and determined by lifestyle factors and age: The LifeLines cohort
Atherosclerosis May 23, 2018
de Vries JK, et al. - Researchers evaluated sex- and age-specific prevalence of non-LDL dyslipidemia (NLD) per 10-year age intervals in adults without cardiovascular disease not using lipid-modifying drugs from the Dutch LifeLines cohort. They also investigated independent determinants of NLD using multivariable regression, with an emphasis on lifestyle, anthropometric, and medical factors. NLD was defined as low HDL-cholesterol or high triglycerides or high remnant cholesterol as per guideline cut-off values. An already frequent occurrence of NLD at an early age was reported. The identified strong determinants of NLD included modifiable lifestyle choices, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. The substantial contribution of public health efforts to decrease NLD was also suggested.
