New WHO prevalence estimates of mental disorders in conflict settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Lancet Jun 16, 2019
Charlson F, et al. – Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, the researchers updated previous estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) with respect to the prevalence of mental disorders in conflict-affected settings, and calculated the burden per 1,000 population. Specifically, they examined the prevalence rates of depression, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. They found that, in conflict-affected populations, there was a high burden of mental disorders. The estimated prevalence of mental disorders was 22.1% at any time point in the conflict-affected populations examined. Based on their findings, the investigators noted an urgent need to implement scalable mental health interventions to address the burden of mental health disorders in conflict-affected populations.
