New persistent opioid use after outpatient ureteroscopy for upper tract stone treatment
Urology Oct 31, 2019
Tam CA, Dauw CA, Ghani KR, et al. - In this investigation involving 27,740 individuals, researchers measured the incidence of persistent opioid use following ureteroscopy (URS). They used claims data to identify adults who had outpatient URS for the treatment of upper tract stones between January 2008 and December 2016 and filled an opioid prescription attributable to URS. After URS, approximately 1 in 16 opioid-naive patients develop new persistent opioid use. Findings suggested an association of new persistent opioid use with the amount of opioid prescribed at the time of URS. Urologists should re-evaluate their patterns of prescribing opioid post-URS based on these findings.
