Negative pressure wound therapy reduces surgical site infections
Journal of Vascular Surgery Sep 03, 2019
Benrashid E, et al. - In this investigation involving 504 patients, researchers analyzed the individual impact of closed surface negative pressure wound therapy (cNPWT) on surgical site infection reduction and other perioperative outcomes. Between January 2016 and December 2017, all patients with lower extremity or infrainguinal incisions were prospectively identified and tracked for infectious complications. Between the groups (cNPWT and standard dressings), no major differences were found in mean age, mean body mass index, perioperative transfusions, use of prosthetic, reoperative field, dialysis status, and presence of diabetes. The authors discovered that using negative pressure wound therapy devices reduces the incidence of infrainguinal wound infections. As part of a patient care bundle, this occurs as an independent factor focusing on modifiable variables in perioperative care.
