Nationwide study of TPE vs IVIG in Guillain-Barré syndrome
Muscle & Nerve Feb 20, 2020
Beydoun HA, et al. - Outcomes of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) vs intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) were investigated among hospitalized patients diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Researchers retrospectively studied a cohort of 6,642 records (2,637 TPE and 4,005 IVIG) from the 2002-2014 Nationwide Inpatient Sample. Compared with patients receiving IVIG, those who received TPE had prolonged hospitalization by about 7.5 days, greater hospitalization costs by nearly $46,000, and increased in-hospital death with an odds ratio of 2.78. Findings thus support a possible association of TPE with poorer healthcare utilization outcomes vs IVIG, although confounding by indication could not be ascertained.
