National study of ocular hospitalizations in Medicare beneficiaries

Prager AJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, 13,152 Medicare cases with ocular hospitalizations were compared with 6,621,005 subjects with nonophthalmic events to analyze the trends of Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized for ophthalmic ailments. Approx. 73.19% of ophthalmic candidates with were emergent admissions with routine discharges (75.50%) and low rates of inpatient mortality (0.62%). They noted diplopia (11.69%) and closed fracture of the orbital floor (3.76%), the most common admitting diagnoses for nontraumatic and traumatic eye conditions, respectively. They noted more prevalence in younger, African American subjects having comorbidities like hypertension, valvular heart disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism, AIDS, lymphoma, solid tumor without metastasis, rheumatologic diseases, alcohol and drug abuse, psychoses, and depression compared to the general Medicare inpatient population.
