N-acetylcysteine vs ascorbic acid or N-acetylcysteine plus ascorbic acid in preventing contrast-induced nephropathy: A meta-analysis

Feng Y, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from randomized controlled trials reporting the efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) vs ascorbic acid (VC) or NAC plus (+) VC on the prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients undergoing contrast administration. For all analysis, the Review Manager 5.2 was used. Using fixed-effects model or random-effects model when appropriate, they estimated pooled risk ratios (RRs) or weighted mean difference (WMD) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The meta-analysis included a total of six randomized controlled trials including 919 patients. Findings demonstrated similar prevention effect of NAC administration and VC or NAC + VC administration on CIN in patients undergoing contrast administration. Data also revealed that relative to VC and NAC + VC administration, significantly lower serum creatinine levels related to NAC administration were detected.
