Muscle-strengthening exercise among 397,423 U.S. adults: Prevalence, correlates, and associations with health conditions
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Oct 27, 2018
Bennie JA, et al. - In this study, researchers analyzed data from the US 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to determine muscle-strengthening exercise participation and its associations with adverse health conditions among US adults (n=397,423). To determine the frequency of muscle-strengthening exercise participation during the past week among participants, they conducted telephone surveys. Findings revealed that muscle-strengthening exercise was associated with better health conditions. Despite this observation, they found that ~60% of US adults do not participate in any muscle-strengthening exercise. The authors recommended future muscle-strengthening exercise promotions to target older adults, females, those with low education/income, and those with a poor health status.
